A conversation with fellow songsmith Mark Cryle, after a photoshoot where the scars and marks of age were revealed in all their glory - on my guitar, as well as my face. The result is ‘Road Wear’, describing the journey of ageing, for both musician, and instrument.

Lyrics

Road Wear (Michael Fix/Mark Cryle)

It had a pristine factory finish
When I got it from the store
I kept it by my bed inside its case
So I practised and we headed out
Like so many gone before
And we rode the bumps and bruises
And the little falls from grace

Chorus 1:
Road wear, road wear
One scar here and another there
Not broken down or beyond repair
Just showing signs of road wear

There’s a photo taken long ago
I’m holding my first guitar
Just a kid with 3 chords and a dream
I was working on Moonshadow
Chasing a distant star
And I think about that boy back then
And the changes that he’s seen

Chorus 2
Road wear, road wear
One scar here and another there
Not broken down, beyond repair
Just showing signs of road wear

BRG) Every scar tells a story
Of imperfection by degree
And when we look into the mirror
We think we know just what we see

But when we look beyond it
We discover so much more
It’s the wisdom in the learning
And the beauty in the flaw

Chorus 3
Road wear, road wear
One scar here and another there
Not broken down or beyond repair
