Have you ever had to 'unlearn' a skill that's totally ingrained, and then had to re-learn it in a new way?
As a follow-up to last week's video request for Classical Gas (thanks for all your comments), I was rummaging through a box of old VCR tapes & came across a TV performance from 1998, where I was asked to step in for Tommy Emmanuel at a major outdoor concert event in Sydney.
It meant learning Tommy's orchestral version of Classical Gas, and in the process 'unlearning' the version I had been playing for many years...
Watching this brought back many memories of the event - scary, but exciting - especially as an afternoon storm ended the rehearsal after only 1 run-through!
I remember wondering whether under pressure I would revert to the 'old' version (which would have put me totally out of step with the orchestra), but I got through to the end without mistake...phew.
